My Students

"Be Yourself. Above all, let who you are, what you believe, shine through every sentence you write, every piece you finish" (John Jakes). My students have so much potential, but most of them don't have the confidence to know it.

The majority of my students come from low income families.

1/3 of my students are ELL (English Language Learners) so keeping up with state reading/writing standards poses a challenge for many of my students; however, I know ALL of my students have a lot of potential. I just need to provide them with the resources they need. Unfortunately, our school's budget has once again been cut so I am looking for an alternate way to provide my students with the resources they need to be successful.

My Project

I am asking for a shared classroom set (7) of talking dictionaries. In order to meet all of my students' needs, I am using Writing Workshop in my classroom. Many of my students become frustrated when expressing their ideas in writing because they get "stuck" trying to think of how to spell a specific word. Because the talking dictionary recognizes words phonetically, students can input words using logic about the way they sound. The talking dictionary will give them the correct spelling. The speaking component provides multisensory input and helps decrease the students confusion in reading similar looking words. The process of decision-making (selecting the correct word)helps reinforce the correct spelling of the word in the future. Some other added bonus features to this product are: an animated handwriting guide, word games, a rhyme finder, vocabulary/word lists, and so much more!

With 26 first graders it is impossible for me to give every student help spelling words immediately, but these talking dictionaries are a fun and useful way for my students to problem solve and figure out spelling on their own.

The word games will be great during centers and Guided Reading. The goal of my project is to create lifelong writers and readers who feel good about themselves. They have so much potential. Are you willing to help them reach it?
