My students need Photoshop to better prepare them for the graphic design programs that many of my yearbook students attend college for.

My Students

First day in graphic design class. Your professor asks how many students were on their high school yearbook staff. You proudly raise your hand. Your professor next asks how many students have used Photoshop before. Out of 50 students, you are the only one to NOT raise their hand.

The above scenario has happened to the last two editors of our school yearbook.

These students are very talented. Many of them have went to college to major in graphic design, photography and journalism. Our school is very rural and many of the students do not have access to Internet other than at school. As such, they rely more on the school to prepare them for their future roles.

My Project

By having Photoshop available for yearbook students to learn, they will no longer be behind their peers when they begin their college career. These talented students won't be tempted to drop out and will come to realize they are just as talented as their more computer literate peers. This project will be used to help produce the school yearbook and therefore, will affect the entire school and community.

My students already feel that they are at a disadvantage just because they attend their school.

We have good teachers, but the kids feel like they don't get the resources they need because of our rural environment. Unfortunately, they are right. As a teacher, I can only afford so much and most of that is taken up with basic classroom supplies for students that can't afford to buy them.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
