Oh, the Books that We'll Read!

My students need a library for read-aloud and independent reading--please help us get one started with classic books!

My Students

"I meant what I said and I said what I meant--and an elephant's faithful, one hundred per cent!" "Let the wild rumpus begin!" I'm sure you remember magical words like these that turned you into life-long readers. Please help my kids share in the joy of reading by donating classic children's books!

My second graders come from rural communities in Mississippi.

We are a high poverty school, but with hard work, strong leadership, and amazing students, we made it off the fail list. Please help us continue our upward trajectory by increasing my kids' access to classic literature.

My Project

We will read all of these books in read-alouds throughout the year, and then they will be available in our classroom library for independent reading. My students have little access to books--they're from rural communities, and libraries are inaccessible to many. The brightest part of our school day is the read-aloud: they get to laugh at the lazy farmer in Farmer Duck; or pity poor Horton, the Giving Tree, or the Lorax; or learn life-long lessons from Lilly, Chrysanthemum, and all of Kevin Henke's characters. I have also selected a number of books that touch on Southern and African-American history so that they can learn about the history of the region. If we have a wide selection of excellent books, my reading lessons will have a greater impact!

Having access to high-quality literature will give my students the chance to experience the same creative worlds that their more affluent peers do daily.

Moreover, the books I have chosen target crucial character skills that second graders need to practice, like loyalty, compassion, and perseverance. By reading and discussing these books, we will develop not only readers, but also leaders!
