My Students

Do you remember the time that you heard your favorite story? What feeling did you have at the end of the story? Did you want to hear another story similar to the one read by your teacher or your mom? Or did you want to create a different ending to the story? My students have that same feeling.

My students face many challenges that only you and I can only imagine.

From being on the verge of homelessness, a single parent income, language barriers, disabilities and health issues. I teach in North Carolina where most of the students within the school are on free and reduced lunch. But even though my students face many challenges they come to school everyday ready to tell a story, whether real or fictitious. My students just want to be heard, and they all have a story to tell. I want to be that teacher that helps cultivates whatever story they have in their heart to tell.

My Project

There are many different stories that we hear everyday, but very few stories that we want to retell, act out or even choose a different ending. But our favorite stories leave us with a smile, a warm heart and thoughts to add-on and continue those stories. Those are the stories that children love to hear. Some of my students may not have the words to retell the story because of language barrier, disability or lack of exposure to reading but the story lapboard and the storytelling kits (Little Red Hen, Very Hungry Caterpillar, Snowy Day) gives them an opportunity to retell a story THEIR WAY without reading the words. Storytelling gives the students a way to use their creativity to create a whole new story or change the ending. What we want the students to learn is that everything they go through or deal with can be a story but they can choose how the ending will be (positive or negative). I just want to be the facilitator to help their stories become great.

Have you ever just wanted someone to believe in you and your potential.

Well, your help can do that for my students. They just want a chance to tell their story and have their voice heard. Will you listen? Will you be the person that will be their publishing company because you believe in their story? My students that are in my class survive many challenges that they face everyday, not because they are lucky, but because They Have A Story To Tell. Please help them tell their story.
