My Students

As children grow and develop they must believe that what they say matters, that their opinions are valuable, and that their ideas have worth. Imagine if you could give to a child that same gift of meaning, of value, of worth - a gift that will allow them to not only form ideas but to pursue dreams.

In our school, students from the West Philadelphia community prove they deserve a chance to learn and will take the necessary risk to achieve.

Our school is designed around the ideals of success through hard work and collaborative effort. Many of my students face the added struggle of learning difficulties, yet continue to rise to the occasion and come to school ready to work every day. For many of my students, reading is a tremendous burden. They struggle with each word and toil through each paragraph. Because of their reading difficulties, many of these students have struggled with language in many forms, especially writing. At the same time, writing can be miraculous - an outlet for emotions, a place to tell stories, a way to exercise creativity - all in a forum that cannot be hemmed in by the realities of the world. Writing is a way a student’s beliefs can be heard, validated, and celebrated. Enabling children to love writing enables them to be their own greatest advocates.

My Project

To make students love writing however, means going beyond the normal. It means stepping out of drill-to-kill grammar work and spelling. It means leaving behind the paradigms that have made writing a chore in the past. We must celebrate the achievements of each student and flash them on the walls for everyone to see and acknowledge. We must make sure that every student understands what is expected, what “great work” looks like, and what their successes actually are! An LCD projector takes regular writing from a page on paper and blows it up larger than life for everyone to see. Instead of discussing a sentence suggestion for a group essay, students get to see their words in bright lights! Instead of hearing about why a particular student’s essay was so strong, they can see it highlighted in parts on the screen. Instead of being bored by writing, students are dazzled by the great work they and their classmates created! An LCD projector turns writing from a mind-numbing experience into one that students can grasp and love.
