My Students

Dictionaries are an important tool in education. Using a dictionary helps build spelling, vocabulary, and reading skills. In first grade, we work on putting words in alphabetical order. We need dictionaries with pictures in them to build our background knowledge. We NEED words, words everywhere!

I have a classroom of first graders who are energetic and excited about learning.

Our school is in a small rural town in Iowa. My students are unfortunate in the way of not having the dictionaries that they need.

My Project

My students need 20 picture dictionaries to enhance their reading skills. What are the uses of a dictionary in lower elementary? My first graders will use a dictionary to locate information or to look up the definition/meaning of a word. They will check parts of speech and grammatical information about a word. We will find verbs, nouns, adjectives, and more. My students will find out how to pronounce a word as the dictionaries include phonics skills. We can work on alphabetic order. We will locate synonyms and antonyms. I can also teach my students how to check their spelling using a dictionary. How will my students benefit from using a dictionary? My students will become stronger readers and writers. They will be more prepared for the upcoming years in school. I will teach my first grade students how to be a good dictionary user with colorful, exciting dictionaries.

By donating dictionaries to my first grade classroom, many doors will be opened for learning.

I cannot stress how important the "paper" version of a dictionary is. With all of the new technology in our world today, sometimes we forget about basic skills. My students need to learn how to use a dictionary. I have 5 dictionaries in my classroom right now and they are very colorless, thin, and aged. We NEED new dictionaries for our classroom.
