My Students

Our high school students today, will soon be the business leaders of the future. The students in my class are learning how to work in business settings by exploring how a business runs as well as how to work with management and deal with customers.

The students in my class have the opportunity to join DECA (International Association of Marketing Students) where they compete in role plays and tests based on the marketing curriculum.

Role plays are a great hands-on way to give students real world experiences. Students take on the positions of manager, a perspective employee, or a current employee. Role plays include: presenting ideas and solutions to potential problems faced in the real world, interviewing for employment positions among others. The judges are local entrepreneurs, managers, former teachers and even college professors. Throughout all of this they are learning more and more about how to survive in the real world. My class includes not only college bound honors students but also those who plan to immediately enter the workforce upon graduation.

My Project

With the Flip Camcorder, I can help show example role plays to students for years to come. The camcorder will allow students practicing to see for themselves what they need to improve on. We work hard to prepare for DECA competitions. I have students that compete locally, state wide and even internationally. It is helpful to watch examples of what you will be doing when you compete, but more than watching examples it will be a great tool to help students reflect on how well they did. The students can be videotaped easily while practicing and then it can be put on the computer or ActivBoard where they can watch to see what they want to change. It is more meaningful when the students can see and reflect on the changes they need to make rather than when I simply tell them.

This project will not only affect current students and our competitions; this will be a wonderful tool for many years to come.

More than the students being able to better practice for competitions, it will affect their future as business leaders. These role plays put students in the shoes of adults and it gets them thinking and brainstorming so that when they are out in the "real world" they will be better prepared.
