My Students

Learning about history can sometimes be "boring" for students because it is difficult for them to imagine what life was really like then. They live in such a technologically savvy culture that it's difficult for them to understand let alone appreciate the rich history of Westward Expansion.

My wonderful students attend a suburban middle school in Missouri.

The district is going through financial hardship, which many are, and it is difficult for me to purchase all the additional resources I would like to have to make their learning even more enriching! They are creative, imaginative, and determined. They come from varied socio-economic backgrounds and their learning styles and levels are all across the board!

My Project

These resources will allow my students to learn about Westward Expansion through the eyes, music, stories and personal accounts of those that experienced it- instead of me just having them read their textbooks and listen to me lecture. Specifically, the 20 plays for US History classes resource, the Cartoon History resource, the US History Reader's theater and We Were there too accounts will allow the students to have a sense of involvement in the human dramas and eyewitness accounts that make up the history of Westward Expansion. The map resource will allow them to trace routes taken by explorers and understand the difficulties of traveling through uncharted lands. The films provide excellent visual and auditory commentary to further help the students grasp the complexities that were undertaken by the explorers and settlers. Finally, the music provides a sense of understanding of the mood that was felt by those experiencing the history.

I really need these materials to help supplement the students materials for learning about Westward Exploration and expansion of the US.

History is supposed to be exciting, engaging, and interesting and the textbook just isn't cutting it for today's youth. These resources will be used again and again by myself, my students, and other teachers in the building.
