My Students

Please help our struggling readers! Research shows when struggling readers listen to an audio book while following along with their eyes, they develop greater independent fluency and understanding in their own reading. We have many CD audio books available at our public library, but no players.

My classroom is filled with 22 wonderful students who come from various races and backgrounds.

Many of the children in my class qualify for free and reduced lunch at school. They are very hard workers, who have really come to love reading! We are looping together this year, and I would really like to reach a handful of the kids that continue to struggle with reading. Since they are getting older, I want them to be able to enjoy the grade level literature that is available, though they cannot read it independently at this point.

My Project

Providing the portable CD players would open the wonderful world of young adult literature to my struggling readers. Action research conducted by many classroom teachers shows that using audio books provides the independent fluency modeling these students need. Bringing audio books into our reading program would allow my students the assistance of someone modeling proper reading as they enjoy the content of books they would not otherwise be able to pick up. In addition, the portable players would allow me to create take-home packs so my students could enjoy reading after school hours. Extending their reading independence into the home environment would empower them to complete assignments using grade level books, and more importantly, help to create a love of the written word, rather than dread.

Providing the tools we need to utilize collections of audio books will allow my struggling readers to become independent, fluent, and proud of their reading progress.

They will be able to enjoy picking up a new book, rather than becoming frustrated at their still-developing skills. It will also enable my students to enjoy books with characters and events that they can relate to rather than the lower level books their reading abilities restrict them to at this time.
