Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Please, open the door for us! Tools for making sense of mathematics abounds outside the traditional textbook. Access to these technology tools can make the difference in personalizing the learning experiences and motivating students. Many of my students cannot afford this access. We need help!
I teach 10th and 11th grade Algebra 2 in a high-needs public charter school.
A large majority of our students are low-income and minority. 95% of these students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of them and do not have access to computers at home or at school. Furthermore, many of my students have never had the opportunity of using much technology to learn mathematical concepts in their lower grades.
Our charter school focuses on helping under-served students get into and through college. Our school provides a nurturing environment for these students in an effort to bridge the educational gap. Access to technology will enhance the quality of education of these students in this environment.
My Project
Taking an upper level math course in high school is challenging to many. It can become overwhelming to students if they do not have the support or resources to understand the new content. As our class continues to learn new upper level math concepts, we become increasingly cognizant of the limitations in our classroom because we do not have the technology to support our students’ development.
Furthermore, many of my students do not have computers at home. At school, we have just a small handful of working computers for our 500 students to share, which further complicates the situation.
Having technology in the math classroom is imperative if we want to prepare our students to succeed in college and to be competitive in a global economy. With access to computers in the math classroom, students can access interactive learning tools that can enhance their comprehension of difficult foundational concepts. Students can learn at their own pace using tools that meet their personal needs.
We need technology in classrooms to prepare our students for college and life.
Your donation makes it possible for my students to believe they can be successful using math in college and beyond. Your donation will also allow us to explore math in new contexts. Many of my students fear math and do not believe math will be critical in their college preparation or for their professional life. I hope to help them overcome their fear and limitations as under-privileged students.
