My Students

Where do we get corn? We get corn from the grocery store. That's right, most of my students do not know where most of the food that they eat comes from. The students need a grassroots education helping them understand their environment and how to use education of sustainability to help our future.

My students are the future that is why we need to address sustainability so as they will have a future.

The school is in an urban area. The demographics of the population is very diverse with the Latino population being the largest around 50%, black American around 40%, Caucasian 9%, and other 1%. We have had a high rate of gang activity since the school was open. I think that it is very important for the students to think about their environment and take ownership of their lives. A large percent of our students fail to graduate. They quit to take jobs, to stay at home with their babies, to take care of their addicted parents, and to just give up. The students thrive on subjects that pertain to them so I would like to introduce them to education of sustainable development so that they can see their future and live it to the fullest. My students are the best in North Carolina and I want them to feel the best.

My Project

We have got to get the youth excited about their education. I want to excite the students into learning about their environment. I want them to be able to say positive things to people-yes, we have to bring the good out of ourselves also to understand sustainability. My students need curriculum support and a composter to get started on learning about sustainablity. We will share the fruits of our labor. Getting the students and their families involved with this project will create a learning environment and this will reignite the love of education.

The broad impact will be that the students will look at their world in green colored glasses.

We are just here on Earth borrowing from children. We will have to leave the Earth better than we found it. Environmental issues are connected to all of our being-health, work, fun, etc. so we need to know as much as we can on how to keep our Earth available for other generations.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
