My Students

Students think school stinks. Teachers think students stink (seriously, have you smelled a middle-schooler lately?). Let's make learning a pleasant olfactory experience for kids and teachers everywhere!

The majority of my students are economically disadvantaged and sometimes cannot afford basic school supplies, much less "fun" supplies.

These kids need some positive reinforcement to get them enthused about learning. They have the potential... we just need to help them get motivated to read, write, and explore the world around them.

My Project

Each year, my students keep a science journal with all of their science vocabulary words. This year I will be teaching two subjects: science and math. I would like to have the students keep up with just one notebook for my classroom with sections for vocabulary, science labs, and their objectives/assignments. As an incentive to keeping up with all of their vocabulary words and writing down their assignments, I would like to award them periodically with Smencils. Hopefully, this will motivate them to actually write in their journals.

Students today rarely receive the positive feedback that they deserve for their achievements.

Is keeping up with a vocabulary notebook an achievement? For a ten-year-old it is! These kids need something positive in their life, even if it is just a nice smelling pencil. If it inspires them to love learning (and masks that pervasive middle-schooler odor), then it's well worth it.
