Expanding Our Horizons: Great States Geography

My students need games and resources to help them discover a passion for the great states of this nation.

My Students

Have you heard the radio commercial where the teacher and class participate in a monotone question and answer session? “Class the capital of Alaska is? Juneau. Wyoming? Cheyenne.” Why should learning about the states be so mundane when our nation is so vibrant?!

My 26 fourth graders reside in a high poverty area.

Even with little, they are happy and healthy. Still, they are hungry for knowledge. They devour new ideas, words, stories, and concepts. Most of their families have little financial resources to travel the country with. Their daily lives take place within a “bubble” that encases only our town and surrounding suburbs. I would like to provide materials that place the great United States of America within their reach. With these materials, my students will see and read about things they never knew existed. The materials will “burst their (sheltered) bubble” so to speak!

My Project

In fourth grade students learn about our nation as a whole, characteristics of its regions, and the uniqueness of each state. As a culmination project, students in small groups will pick a state to research and give a detailed report. These materials will serve to introduce, practice, and expand upon curriculum. Without the materials, unfortunately this unit of study will be primarily textbook based. Please help to liven up our learning!

In the teaching of geography, I have several goals.

The first is to produce knowledgeable citizens who will one day make decisions that are beneficial to our country based on their understanding of our nation’s landscapes and economies. A second is to illicit pride for our nation; what its people have accomplished and what its land has to offer. Finally, I hope to excite my students concerning the world around them and inspire a heart for travel to see everything we’ve discussed in person.
