My Students

Read all about it! Being knowledgeable about current events is vital to becoming well-rounded and productive citizens. Help me bring "kid-friendly" current events to my 5th graders!

My 5th graders are excited to read about high-interest current events that impact their lives.

They also need sources of short text to support their reading of non-fiction. Magazines not only are excellent sources of short text, but also engage reluctant readers.

My Project

Although awareness of current events is important to becoming well-rounded citizens, many sources of current events, such as newspapers, are geared towards adults that may include information not suitable for children. Fortunately, this need has been met by children's publishers. Weekly Reader magazine is the perfect source of current events and short non-fiction text! Each week, my students will be able to read about and discuss newsworthy events. Weekly Reader's articles are appropriate for my students' reading level, and the non-fiction text features (such as headings, photos, diagrams, captions, and graphs) support students' reading. The magazine format will capture their attention and motivate them to read. Even better, Weekly Reader provides an interactive online issue each week, complete with audio, video clips, and animations! These features will enhance instruction, deepen comprehension, and further motivate reluctant readers.

Weekly Reader magazine is rich with educational articles and enticing photographs.

Please help my 5th graders receive a subscription to Weekly Reader so they can learn about current events and improve their reading of non-fiction texts! With an increased awareness of worldly events, my students will become well-rounded members of our society.
