My Students

"Uh! I hate writing." That is the statement that is most commonly heard when I start the writing curriculum in any given school year. The students absolutely loathe our 45 minute block of writing. I would love to motivate them to want to write and have pride in their final products.

I teach in a semi-urban school that is approximately 98% free and reduced lunch.

My placement is fifth grade reading and English language arts. I teach approximately 65 students of varying levels. The students are often unable to bring in their own basic supplies, so we are not often able to give them extras.

My Project

I am requesting fun pens and markers for the students to use when they write. I am also asking for construction paper and glitter for them to decorate their final projects. I am also asking for folders for them to store their works in progress and published pieces in. The biggest item I have requested is a small video recorder for the students to act out their stories.

Reading and writing are very connected.

In most cases a good writer is a good reader. I truly believe that students will be more motivated to write if they have fun doing it and take pride in their work. This is why I have asked for the construction paper, glitter, and pens. These will make the process of writing more fun. I also asked for a small video camera. My hope is to use this to allow the students to act out their narrative stories and persuasive pieces.
