My Students

This year, I am teaching a class of young children with autism. They are wonderful children that look forward to each day at school.

Many of my students are challenged by sensory integration problems.

The little sounds, sights and smells that most people don't even notice can distract them enough to keep them from learning. The flicker of fluorescent lights, the noises of a normal school and the smells wafting down the hall from the cafeteria can send them into a frenzy.

My Project

I want to buy special shades to cover the electric lights in my room so that the room is not so bright. This will allow the students to concentrate on their classwork better. I need an aromatherapy fan and essential oils to use with it. I have picked scents that are pleasant and also have been shown to reduce stress and increase concentration. Finally, I will purchase calming classic music Cd's that will filter out distracting sounds.

My students are capable of learning, but need help to pay attention to schoolwork instead of other things around them.

By providing these simple tools, these children will be able to meet the challenges that they face.
