What's one sure way to combat senioritis? Researching the most fascinating eight seconds in American history!

The 60 students in my Senior Composition classes in a large urban high school struggle not only with motivation to write in the spring, but also with research skills and expository writing.

A modification of Kelly Gallagher's JFK project will provide much-needed inspiration and writing practice.

My Project

My students need a wide range of sources on President Kennedy's assassination to improve their command of expository writing in a half-and-half research paper. They will be challenged to complete a half-and-half research paper covering the Kennedy assassination. In the first half of the paper, students will work collaboratively to demonstrate an understanding of the basic events, the government's findings, and key conspiracy theories. In the second half, students will explore their own question through self-directed research. Beginning with collaboration will ensure all students have practiced the skills and processes needed for the independent second half of the project. While the general parameters of the topic are set, students will have the ability to pursue their own interests because the topic is rich and complex.
