This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Literature helps everyone understand the world just a little bit better, but that awareness doesn't happen to students without reading others' voices.

My students come from all sorts of cultural backgrounds, around a wide metro area.

Each offers a different story and contribution to our collective class knowledge, but sometimes they don't realize the power of their voices. In middle school especially, it can be hard to see beyond a group of friends to include outside views.

My Project

I want my students to read John Boyne's Boy in the Striped Pajamas to learn about perspective and voice. The main scenes of the novel take place on either side of a fence, a boundary (motif) our class will study all year. Fences are everywhere, and while they may separate us, they also provide clear spaces for identifying the abstract idea of perspective. Everybody's voice comes from somewhere. Everyone recognizes there are multiple places for voices outside theirs. Yet without this recognition, students can feel isolated by whatever side of the fence they're located.

This class set of books will require students to connect with their own points of view, their limits of whatever worldview (fence) their experience has given and challenge them to see beyond boundaries.

As a result, our class will form stronger community with students' abilities to appreciate their own and unique peers' voices.
