My Students

Children learn in many different ways and classroom centers help break up the monotony of the day and excite them about learning. A CD listening center is a good place to introduce kids to audio books and musical learning. It also helps students that have trouble reading get excited about reading.

In my classroom, I have approximately 6-12 middle school children that have cognitive impairments.

Although my students are in grades 6-8, most of them read at a Kindergarten/1st grade level. Due to this, the majority of them do not get excited with reading.

My Project

Why do I need a listening center in my classroom? For many reasons: it helps students build sight vocabulary, it models phrasing and fluency, students get exposure to a variety of story structures, and it would provide access if higher text levels. It would also help my students improve their listening skills, foster independence, and compliment/supplement content curriculum. At times, it would also give my students an opportunity to listen to own taped reading for self assessment. What kinds of text materials can be used? Leveled books, teacher made tapes, newspaper articles, poetry, plays, genre and author study texts, student made tapes, book pairs to compare/contrast (fiction vs. non, similar characters, different versions of the same story, etc.)

A listening center can be used in so many ways and your donation will make a huge impact on the students.

It would be used daily and made a very important part of my classroom! It would not only excite the students, but it would make one of their daily struggles (reading) smaller.
