My Students

If we build it, they will learn -math, that is. Many students dislike math because it is so difficult for them to understand; my desire as a math teacher is to implement newer strategies in my classroom that will help bridge the gap between my students and their math skills.

I teach 8th grade students in a rural town in Alabama.

A large portion of my students are on free and/or reduced lunches; therefore, they do not have cameras at home to bring to class to use in this activity. My students' abilities range from low to high with regards to their math abilities; I am trying to bring them all where they need to be for future grades.

My Project

As a math teacher, I feel that helping students make connections to math helps them understand math better. My project involves using a digital camera to help students understand slope better. After teaching the basics of slope, I want to send my students on a scavenger hunt for things on our campus that have a slope. After taking the pictures then printing them on graph paper, we will take class time to actually find the slope for each element that they have in their pictures. For my students, the opportunity to go outside and do a math activity would mean so much. This activity will build for my students a better understanding of slope thus preparing them more for advanced topics to come.

Having these cameras will allow me to do a lot more with my students this year than I have in years past.

I will be doing other scavenger hunts as well such as a geometry scavenger hunt after Christmas.
