My students need several fluency materials including play scripts, timers, and poetry journals, and sight word games to increase their reading fluency.

My Students

Imagine if you were trying to read, but stumbled over every fifth word. Or what if you didn't know the meaning of punctuation, so you read aloud without any expression? This is what I find many of my students doing, and I'm hoping to catch it early on this year!

I am a third grade teacher in a Title I Public Academy, located in a low socioeconomic area.

Most of my students are at risk and qualify for free or reduced lunch service. Unfortunately, my school is struggling financially, as many districts are. While they can supply pencils, crayons, and paper, many of the extras that really make learning engaging and meaningful, are not an option right now. My students love to talk and learn from one another. Many of the supplies I requested can be used in a cooperative learning setting, so that my students are not just learning from me, but also from their peers.

My Project

I am asking for several materials that will improve my students reading fluency and sight word vocabulary. I've included several sight word games, which will help my students learn basic vocabulary while they have fun at the same time. The fluency materials will allow my students to learn how important it is to read steadily and with expression. I've also included several Reader's Theater scripts. Reader's Theater is a great activity that allows students to practice and perform short skits, emphasizing using expression as they read aloud. Another resource that I'm so excited about are the poetry journals. Each student will receive a poetry journal that will let them practice reading selected poems aloud, then respond to them in writing in their journal. Poetry is a wonderful way to emphasize fluency within the classroom.

Using these materials will not only make a huge difference in the way my students read aloud, but in the way they hear and comprehend reading selections when they read silently.

Instead of struggling through texts, they will have strategies and resources to help them read fluently. I want to thank you for considering my project. You are making a difference in our children by the generous donations you provide through Donors Choose!
