My students need 30 copies of the book "The Gold Cadillac" to read as we begin to understand diversity and our unique strengths.

My Students

"No one understands me!" This is a comment I hear almost every day from the fourth graders I teach. In my rural North Carolina classroom, students come from a variety of backgrounds and often struggle with understanding how diversity changes and affects us both as individuals as well as a society.

Our public school has a motto that we all recite every day: "I can be anything, I do anything, I can achieve anything because I can and I want to." It is easy to say this, but it can be quite difficult to believe.

My precious students need role models to see that the statement is true. Many of them have never traveled outside our small town and simply do not have the experiences to help them understand our world and all the many, many ways they can and will change it. They need to see those characters that make a difference!

My Project

In the story "The Gold Cadillac," my students will discover characters that observe the world around them--good and bad--and then act to change their corner of it. What a great example! We will be able to read this novel together and investigate the literary skills needed to understand and enjoy it, the history that this piece of fiction is grounded in, and the social impact our own backgrounds have on the world around us.

I want my wonderful students to experience the world.

I want them to see what is great in it, but I also want them to understand that when things are not right, they have the power to affect change. Please help them learn this important lesson and give us a vehicle by which to launch this discussion and eventually, this life-changing realization.
