Students Explore History through Novels

My students need 3 class novel sets of 33 copies of "Bud, Not Buddy", "When Zachary Beaver Came to Town", and "Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963" to encourage discussions about events in history.

My Students

What if you weren't allowed to meet new people and explore new experiences? Books allow us to transcend to different a different time and place. I'm asking you to give them the opportunity to meet these new people through novels.

My students come from mixed backgrounds, but I don't let that affect their performance in the classroom.

I don't find it necessary to reveal their economic situations because that doesn't identify who they are as learners. My students come to school eager to learn and take advantage of every opportunity given to them. Since I am forced to define: "Who are they?" I would have to say that they are explorers. The explore their comprehension, their discussions, and their questions.

My Project

My students need class novel sets to encourage discussions about events in history. I would love the opportunity to use novels in my classroom instead of just the basal reader. I am requesting these titles because they align with the history that we teach. Bud, Not Buddy explores Hoovervilles and The Great Depression. Watson's examines segregation, racism, and Civil Rights. Zachary deals with the stresses of Vietnam War. Rather than read random unrelated stories in the basal and then read about events in history out of a book, students can place themselves back in history. They can explore how people felt and examine the issues that people faced during that time.

Students deserve the opportunity to discuss and debate: to question.

They shouldn't be hand-fed information to accept as truth. To really make an impact, students need to have these experiences. These books would be shared among my entire grade-level of fifth grade students. Please allow our students these new opportunities to make learning and reading meaningful.
