My Students

What's your learning style? Do you learn best by seeing? Hearing? Doing? We all learn in different ways, but we all learn best when we are highly engaged. My students are curious, active first graders with a variety of backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles, and they love technology!

We are part of a large urban school district in Texas.

Our district supports technology for learning, but the budget is thin, and there is little technology available to the students. Even so, I am amazed at how quickly they learn, and get the most that they can, out of aging computers. They love to play learning games, and to help each other navigate interactive websites and applications. I have seen significant improvement in reading and math skills through the use of technology. Technology learning is hands-on, interactive, and engaging, and enables students to build information and communication technology skills, as well as critical thinking and collaborative learning skills. These 21st Century skills are essential in today's world, and will prepare my first graders for a future of learning and discovery. They are digital natives, and they need access to the learning tools of their world.

My Project

With the iPod touch, my students will explore content, conduct research, engage in logical thinking activities, and create products that showcase their learning. They will use applications for learning letters, sounds, and words, numbers, counting and problem-solving - even make their own flashcards! The iPod can be a dictionary, a calculator, and even a practice clock. My students can listen to audio books for children on the iPod, many of which are read by the authors themselves! With Spoken Motion, students can annotate images from a photo library while at the same time recording their voices to create a movie file. Finished movies can be emailed to a teacher or class email account. Students could annotate the parts of a plant, the life cycle of a butterfly, or their 100th day of school celebration. Students could create a quick audio book review... or, better yet, create original creative stories with their own graphics created in an art application on the iPod touch!

The iPod touch, a tiny hand-held device, offers vast learning opportunities.

Having iPod touches in my classroom will open new doors to learning. We will use them in whole group, small group, and individual settings. We will explore applications and information, find answers to our questions, and create our own educational products. The sky is NOT the limit! (There is a planetarium app that will allow students to easily locate planets and constellations in their local sky and around the world.)
