My Students

I still remember staying up late reading my favorite books by flashlight, under my covers after I was supposed to be asleep because I had to know how the story would end. Many of my students have not discovered the amazing world that can be found between the covers of a great book.

I teach 4th grade in a large rural district in Oklahoma.

There is a high percentage of Hispanic children. The poverty rate among the students is also a concern. Because of this problem, many students are not introduced to a variety of literature. Many of my students do not seem to enjoy reading and only read when required to.

My Project

I am requesting the first 15 books from the Hank the Cowdog series. I am also asking for those same books on CD read by the author, John Erikson. These books are very humorous books that focus on the adventures of a dog named Hank. My students will be able to relate to Hank because of the antics that he gets into. My students will be hooked into the stories because they are familiar with the topics in these stories. They understand about keeping coyotes away from the chickens, the hot summer heat, gunny sacks, and hay bales. By providing the CDs of these stories, I will be able to get my students hooked on these books and stories as they listen to them. When they get hooked into the stories they will begin to start selecting these books for their own reading enjoyment.

One of the most difficult tasks of a teacher is finding the hook that will engage a reluctant reader and change them into a life-long reader.

By supporting this project, you will introduce a wonderful series of books to children who have yet to discover the joy that can be found within the pages of a great book.
