My Students

Do you remember how you learned how to "borrow" and "carry" many years ago? Today it's called regrouping and my classroom of 25 students find regrouping a challenge. This third grade standard is extremely important in our everyday math work. Students need to see the WHY of regrouping.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds.

Some are the oldest sibling when they get home and their parents work while they're asleep. They don't have a lot of help at home and don't get a lot of practice in math or reading. They are an eager group of students, ready to learn and make their loved ones proud.

My Project

Many of my students cannot 'see' the reasoning behind regrouping. They want to subtract from the bottom up. They need to see why and where those numbers come from when one borrows or carries to the next place value. With these resources, students will be able to see the process and practice it with hands-on manipulatives, making the shift to real-life math problems easier.

Instead of just "telling" the students to carrying the one or cross out the 8 and make it a 7, these resources allow students to see WHY those numbers become what they do.

Using the base 10 blocks, they can physically borrow from another place value to make the problem "come to life."
