Teaching with Technology

My students need an LCD projector in order to watch clips and speeches and learn vocabulary more efficiently in our classroom.

My Students

How do you teach background knowledge? My students are very sheltered in what they know and I often find myself struggling to find interesting ways to help the students connect to the texts we read. Without technology it is hard to appeal to those students who learn visually.

I want my students to be able to watch some of the various videos available online that relate to our class work since most of them have never left New York and have a very limited scope of knowledge.

Throughout my time collaborating with my colleagues I have found that most students in our poverty-stricken neighborhood have very limited experiences and have no idea of the wealth of information out there. The students I teach are several years behind grade level in reading due mostly to limited background knowledge and vocabulary base. For example, one of the questions on the state test last year related to a girl caring for a cape water buffalo in a Vietnamese rice paddy. My students had no idea what any of that meant. I can tell them things, but most students need a way to connect directly to material in order to process it. Since we cannot fly to Vietnam, I would love to be able to use the internet's videos and interactive games and maps to bring this knowledge alive for them.

My Project

Since I will be teaching ELA, Reading and Social Studies next year I am taking on a huge chunk of the vocabulary and background knowledge education of my classes. So many wonderful resources are available online to help animate this information, but my school faces so many budget cuts every year that our access to this material is extremely limited. The 6th grade teachers at my school share one projector and the access per teacher is incredibly limited. Aside from being able to tap into a lot of the internet's resources, having a projector would also cut the time we spend on vocabulary instruction in half. We have a policy in our school to teach 10 words a week and we use a process called "excel vocabulary." With excel, there are 7 steps for each word. I love the process, but when I have to write out each of the steps as we go I often lose entire class periods to vocabulary. If vocab could go faster, then I could relate the words we learn to the text they are taken from!

In the age of technology a lot of students are being left behind.

Many of my students still do not have computers or internet access at home. The benefits of exposing my students to the internet in an interesting and relevant way are numerous. Having a projector at my disposal will make my instruction more effective and more relatable. Instead of only reaching the few students who learn through auditory instruction, I will also be able to connect with the students visually.
