Oh! The Places We'll Go!: (If We Just Get That PROJECTOR!)

My students need a projector to view technology generated images (Skype, PowerPoint, etc.) projected onto a screen in the front of our classroom - imagine the possibilities!

My Students

Oh! The places we COULD go with 21st Century technology! My students COULD visit any place on earth with the click of a few buttons, could befriend a classroom halfway around the world, and have live chats with their favorite authors! Only, we lack a few pieces of equipment to make it happen.

My students could benefit greatly from experiences mentioned above, because we are a high poverty school, with limited resources.

We were awarded an honor last year as the national 'School of Distinction' because of the diversity within our school population compared to the high achievement of our students. Which moves to the one thing we do NOT lack - a love for learning! Several times last year my students would be studying a topic and visit on-line sites while gathered around ONE computer screen (while their teacher was wishing silently that she could project what they were seeing on the big screen in the front of the classroom!) In particular I recall watching an animated demonstration of the 'water cycle' and would call students, five at a time, to watch it.

My Project

I've just returned from a week-long training on Web 2.0 technologies. I'm really excited about what I've learned and the possibilities of implementing them into my instruction. For example, one of these is Skype - where my kids could befriend another classroom to share what we're learning weekly; we could perform a science investigation and compare OUR data with THEIR data; and hold live conversations! Imagine my rural, small- town kids meeting other students their age from another culture while being able to SEE them as well as TALK with them in live time! I would love to create engaging PowerPoint presentations for my students but need to PROJECT these. I'd like to use a 'flip camera' to record my students giving 'book talks' much the same way 'Reading Rainbow' does this on PBS. I want to teach my students how to keep their reading logs by blogging while demonstrating on my laptop. Here, again, we need to be able to see these images on the big screen!

Please help us with the 'missing link' - a projector - - - the possibilities are endless on how something so simple could enrich my student's learning!

OH! THE PLACES WE COULD GO! Please take us there!
