My Students

How do you best learn about weights, measurements, and fractions? Is it by reading and looking at pictures? Or by weighing, measuring, and using manipulatives? Most of us learn best by doing and exploring. This is particularly true of my students in the self-contained special ed classroom.

My students are in grades 9 Through 12.

The classroom is in a public high school in Maine. It is the self-contained classroom with 13 to 15 students, all with disabilities. The students are all working towards high school diplomas and a few will go on to further their education. The students in my class are with me the entire 4 years that they are in high school.

My Project

My students enjoy classes that allow them to learn by doing and that tend to be practical in nature. The tools requested - gallon measurement set, scales, tape measures, magnetic apples and pizzas - will allow them to do just that while making sense of measurements and fractions. My students will gain important knowledge and skills that will be needed throughout their lives and that will provide the basis for scaffolding as they learn more math/geometry. Building trades students, for example, will be able to find the perimeter and area for rooms, measurements needed to know how much supplies they need for various projects. These hands-on exercises will help to bring geometry alive for the students. Fractions will make more sense when they work with the magnetic apples or pizzas to divide the whole into parts. Conversion charts will become understandable when they are able to physically convert quarts to gallon, pints to quarts, and such. Math will be fun and logical with these tools.

Your generous support of this project will help me to bring math, specifically measurements and fractions, to life for my students.

With the tools requested they will be able to gain an understanding of weights, measures, and fractions that they have been struggling with by having the opportunity to learn by doing. I am so excited at the prospect of having these tools for my students - of being able to bring math to life for them.
