Pretend and Sensory Play at Its Best

My students need 3 tents, 4 bags of sand and 2 waterproof mats.

My Students

In recent years, the focus of education has been on reading and literacy. While it is an integral part of children's education, as a pre-kindergarten teacher, I have learned that the best way to provide the base and structure for future experiences in reading and literacy is through play.

The majority of my students come from working families.

Sometimes they do not even see their families too often because they are trying to provide the best that they can for their children. Often they see their child care providers more often than their parents. During this time, these children keep themselves amused and entertained with the computer or television. Very seldom do my students have the opportunity to express their creativity or use their imagination (outside of the technology world). I would like to bring back their imagination while in school. School does not have TVs and computer use is very limited. Children are encouraged to use their imagination each and every day.

My Project

To provide the groundwork for their future education, I want my students to express their thoughts and feelings through play. Traditional play materials include blocks and the "home" related materials such as cups, plates and food. I am requesting three different tents, where children can create their own ideas. Children will no longer be limited by the kitchen toys, they will create their own scenes. The best part is that the boys will not feel that they have to play with girls' toys. Sand and water play is another area that I would like my students to expand their play upon. Too often though, the water and sand lands on the floor and creates an unsafe area for my students. These mats would provide a nice safe place to absorb the water and help to create traction for the sand. Children are able to think and wonder about what happens when sand/water goes in a sieve or a wheel. They will be able to problem solve as to why a bigger bucket looks like it holds more but does not.

Your help will ensure that my students will develop and foster their creativity as they grow through each year of school.

They will also learn to feel confident in what they have to say and express to others.
