21st Century Math

My students need an LCD projector to bring math alive and into the 21st century in our classroom.

My Students

We are living in the 21st century where technology is infused into every aspect of our lives. Unfortunately, the most technology that my students are exposed to is an overhead transparency projector. In order for my students to compete they will need to be exposed to technology at a young age.

Our school is in a network of charter schools whose mission is to close the achievement gap between children in low-income neighborhoods and their higher-performing suburban counterparts.

My students are growing up in the neighborhood of Crown Heights in Brooklyn, New York. The school serves a population that is 3% Hispanic/Latino and 97% African American, the majority of whom are of West Indian descent. Crown Heights is a working class neighborhood, where many families work multiple jobs in order to provide for their families. Sixty-five percent of the students qualify for free or reduced priced lunch. Our students come to us because of our reputation as a high-performing charter school that will prepare each scholar for a top high school and later on a top college. Parents have chosen our school because they know that a top quality education can give their children opportunities that they may not have had.

My Project

An LCD projector in our classroom will give my students exposure to the technology that they need to be fluent with to compete with other students as they move on to top high schools and colleges. Technology will be interwoven into our everyday math lessons. Math presentations will come alive as students become proficient in using Power Point and Excel to present their findings to their classmates. Another benefit of the projector is its ability to connect traditional pencil and paper math to the real world through the use of pictures and video. Students will be able actually see how math is used in everyday situations and solve problems in a real-world context. Finally, our students who struggle the most in math generally have difficulty understanding its abstract principles. With an LCD projector in my classroom, I can use virtual manipulatives provided online by the National Council on Teaching Mathematics to help students to visualize hard to understand mathematical concepts.

My students grow up in a neighborhood where a top quality education is not easy to come by.

They have been fortunate to win a spot in a charter school, with the hopes of attaining an excellent education, because they know that it can open doors and provide opportunities to unlock their dreams. I want my students to leave my classroom feeling confident in their abilities as mathematicians not just with a pencil and paper, but with the tools and technology that they will see in the real world.
