The Science of Seuss

My students need bags for take home units and a small alphabet area rug that allows them to practice skills at a station in the room.

My Students

Dr. Seuss is known for his stories with nonsensical rhymes for children. They entertain on a student level and speak to social issues on the adult level. Authors have examined his symbolism but none have tapped the books for the science concepts wrapped around the rhymes. I'd like to change that.

My boys and girls love the rhyming quality of Dr. Seuss.

Some are at high risk of reading failure due to socioeconomic and many qualify for free and reduced lunch. I did too, as a child, but I can personally say that motivation makes the difference. It is not a matter of where they are from but rather where they will go. "Oh the Places You'll Go" illustrates that best. "The Cat in the Hat" shows gravity they will love. "Thidwick the Moose" opens the door for animal habitats and "In a People House" is perfect for simple machines. These 25 public school students are eager to try new things and love to learn. They can even take that enthusiasm out the door to extend their learning day by taking these activities home on a rotating basis until every child has read the 12 books and done the activity or science experiment with their parents.

My Project

Dr. Seuss took advantage of words many different ways. His anagrams and symbolism in books are well known. Born as Theodore Seuss Geisel, he sometimes shortened his first name while spelling his last name backward and wrote under the name Theo LeSieg. He wrote "Green Eggs and Ham" when challenged by a friend to write a book using 50 words or less. I have received Dr. Seuss books from the Lions Club and donations of some science materials from a local sports team. This project would tie these together into a cohesive project. The students will use the small alphabet rug when reading the rhyming books and tying the letters & words to the science concepts of gravity, simple machines, ecology, transportation, and habitats. This would define the place for a learning station as well as providing follow up activities for the books right on the floor itself. The bags would allow these books and activities to travel home with the students for follow up reading and doing at home.

Dr. Seuss said, "Only you can control your future." This project would allow you to widen the options for my students.

The more options available, the better that future may be. His book, "Oh the Places You'll Go" has a page that says, 'The more you read the more you'll know. The more you learn the more places you'll go' and this is true for us all. At the end of the day I want students to take these packs home saying, "How did it get so late so soon?" and keep on learning at home.
