My Students

Do you remember being a young child begging to have your picture taken or video made of you doing something important? This project would help students capture a special memory to share at home with their loved ones while getting to experience a form of technology they often don't have access to.

I teach at a rural Kansas school with grades pre-K through 6th.

We are a Title I school with a large population of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunches. My students are eager 3rd graders with a love of learning. This is a big year for them. They are learning to write in cursive and multiplication facts. They also have their first experience taking the state reading and math tests. Many of my students come from homes with very little access to technology. I want to do what I can to expose them to using a digital camera.

My Project

Right now I am using my own personal camera to document a few things that go on in my room, but I can't always have it at the school nor can I allow students to use it. Having a camera in our classroom would allow students to document things that go on in our room to include in my weekly newsletter. It would also allow me to capture great memories that occur during our "mystery reader" visits on Fridays. This activity involves a family member of one student coming to read a book to us. I make a memory wall to help commemorate the occasion and to remember what book was read. Students can use the camera to document science experiments. One experiment we do is to grow grass in different types of soil. They could take pictures of the changes they see day to day. This can also be used to make videos of Reader's Theater performances. They can go back and watch, listening for smoothness and prosody. Their writing will also improve when the camera is used for making digital stories.

I cannot tell you enough how important having access to a digital camera and photo printer would be for my students.

It lends itself to so many activities. I can create a new classroom job for a student who would be responsible for taking pictures of daily classroom happenings. Your donation to my project will help bring their learning to life and create many wonderful memories!
