Please Help My Students Develop A Love for Reading!

My students need 6 audio books and their printed counterparts for our "Book Nook".

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but not because they aren’t interested; they just don’t have the confidence to try. With your help, this could change!

We are a Title I school in South Carolina, with a reported 85.8% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.

I teach self-contained special education and the majority of my students are currently reading at a pre-primary to 3rd grade level. These same students however, are extremely intelligent in other ways but lack the motivation to read due to repeated failure.

My Project

This semester I will be teaching reading, sewing and service-learning. I am requesting 6 high interest audio books and their printed counterparts to introduce to our classroom Book Nook. I have many books and magazines available for my students at their reading level, but it is important for them to hold an age appropriate, grade level book and experience the independence of listening to the story unfold, seeing the words and turning the pages.

Introducing Audio Books to our Book Nook would provide students with the opportunity to hear stories read to them while following along.

I also believe that listening to the books on CD and reading along will help my students gain confidence in their reading, improve their reading fluency and most importantly, develop a love for reading. With your help, my students with self-contained special education needs will have opportunity to enjoy reading and discussing popular books with their friends.
