My Students

Most of my students say they have only learned science from a text book. Some of them even say they hate science because it is just a bunch of memorization. I want to show my students that science is not only a hands on investigation of the world, but that it is fun and exciting and COOL.

My students are a wonderful group of teenagers that are thirsting for a reason to like coming to school.

My students come from a poor district in North Carolina. Our district has struggled immensely in recent years and has had to cut funding to many programs for financial reasons. Because of this, lab materials for science classes have evaporated and teachers are left with little else than text books. Due to the absence of lab materials, my students lack the inspiration to get excited about and love science.

My Project

I am kindly asking for a mineral formation and identification kit to go along with my "ROCK star" chapter. During this chapter I get students excited about rocks and minerals by engaging them in a rock star themed chapter. This year I am asking for kits that will allow students to "grow" their own minerals. This will give students a rare chance to actually see how the earth forms with their own eyes. Additionally, the kits come with a dozen new mineral samples for the students to identify using hardness, luster, and reactivity. These kits will give life to my "ROCK star" chapter and pull science out of the science book and onto the lab table.

There are many serious problems that face our earth: pollution, climate change, resource depletion.

We need our youth to become excited about environmental science so that they will pursue a career in the field and help to solve some of our most pressing problems. It is my role as a science educator to light the passion within my students for earth and environmental science. I am asking for your help in achieving this goal by giving me the tools to inspire the teenagers in my class. Thank you.
