My students need 5 copies each of 13 books for Christmas.

My Students

Christmas is a time of wonder and excitement but for many of my students their tree will be bare. They will not complain as they see the true meaning of Christmas. However, we would love to share the joy of giving and give each of them their OWN book to take home this Christmas.

My students are refugees from Burma and they are here fleeing religious persecution.

We have over two hundred English Language Learners in our elementary school. 93% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. These kids have survived sad and frightening circumstances and are so appreciative to be in America. We want each of them to have a gift this Christmas to celebrate a love for reading. There is no better gift!

My Project

Our students often lack the ability or transportation to visit the local library. We want to give each of them a book to read at home. They can use these books to inspire reading in their own homes as well. Most families are illiterate and would benefit from having books readily available in their homes. Students would also be able to share their joy of reading with younger siblings.

Reading is something I had always taken for granted until I started teaching children with such difficult childhoods.

When families cannot read it is even more difficult for our impoverished students to learn to read. This project will put books in many homes!
