Color and Design: Gateways to Literary Elements

My students need 15 basic supplies, including color wheels, colored markers and pencils, folders and a pencil sharpener.

My Students

My students need to become literary detectives, examining in depth the literary elements of plot, character, theme, and setting. To motivate them, I want them to understand color theory and to use colors to compare, contrast, and rate these elements among various authors and genres.

My middle school students in Louisiana attend a public school and all are at-risk.

They live in a video, digital, and technological world -- and motivating them to read classical, award-winning literature and to analyze these in depth is a real challenge, to say the least. However, without such an experience, they will not understand what makes stories, novels, song lyrics, poems great and not just good. They are our future writers, and I want them to understand and appreciate the craft of writing.

My Project

I want to use color to motivate my students. I am requesting color wheels, markers, colored pencils, regular pencils, notebook paper, and other basic supplies for my project. We have no resources for these in our school, and the students' families are not always able to provide them. I will teach the students color theory using the color wheels. Then, when we have finished reading selections of literature and have analyzed the literary elements of these in depth, I want my students to become knowledgeable critics of what they have read. They will use graphic organizers and colors to rate the elements for each piece of literature and will present and discuss their rationales with their fellow students.

My students love to draw and to use markers and colored pencils; but because we do not have these supplies, they are seldom able to do so.

They are also very verbal and enjoy discussions and presentations. By supporting my project, you will make it possible for me to enable my students to appreciate and to understand literature in a way that is creative, fun, and dynamic for them. They will learn to use color in a new and innovative way.
