My Students

I teach a self-contained classroom for students with autism spectrum disorders. The students take the alternative state assessment and are working on learning age-appropriate behavior, employability skills and life skills.

My students all have an autism spectrum disorder.

They need to learn how to become as independent as possible. Due to their disability, they lack appropriate social skills and age-appropriate behavior. I try to vision what their life will be like beyond age 22 when they exit the public school system. I feel it is my duty as their teacher to help them learn skills to enable them to become productive citizens. I want them to practice and learn in the safe environment of our school before they become adults and no longer have our support.

My Project

We need equipment such as aprons to open and maintain this classroom business. We will need some supplies such as tea and coffee to start the business until we can order more. The students will have to keep inventory, complete a daily log of what was sold, make the coffee/tea/hot chocolate, interact with the "customers" and learn money skills including how to make change and use a cash register. Profits from the café will go back into the café to continue the student learning experience.

Your help will ensure that my students learn how to better interact with people, increase money skills and feel a sense of accomplishment.

The coffee/tea shop will also increase their interaction with other faculty/staff than those who work with them on a daily basis. My students typically only know people that are paid to be with them. What a great opportunity for them to interact with people who are not paid to be with them.
