My Students

School should be a safe place to learn, but what if the fear you feel comes from inside you? When do you feel safe enough to participate in the classroom around you? Our program provides several methods to reduce the enormous anxiety they deal with every day, and vital to this is the "sensory diet."

Our program helps students with Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism attend middle school classes.

Our students suffer terrible amounts of anxiety at times, so we use support them with something called a "sensory diet." This is a series of exercises and physical activities that helps the students participate in school, remain calm and attentive, and feel successful. The sensory diet is only a part of our program, but it is a very successful one. Some of our students had difficulty even coming to school in the past, but with the support of our program, they can be in classes with their peers, learning, making friends, and retreating when necessary to the special program classroom. Their attendance improves, their ability to interact with the school community grows, and they are happier and more successful learners.

My Project

Right now, we don't have a padded floor area to use larger sensory equipment. The sensory corner we use at this time has to be limited, for safety reasons, to smaller, fine-motor equipment. To use therapy balls, for example, we need to go to another room and wait until the area is available. Sometimes this isn't fast enough for our students, who can become too anxious to return to class before the sensory resources are available for them to use. Having this safety mat in our room would mean we can use sensory resources such as a therapy ball or large bean bag (full-body input) right in our class, where our students could always have access. It will help us get them the physical calming that they need as soon as they need it, to reduce their anxiety and allow them to regain control over their emotions. This levels the playing field, allowing our students to be at least as emotionally level as the average middle school student, learning from all the elements of the school as a whole.

They will be able to take care of their needs in the safety and privacy of their home classroom, allowing them to increase their independence, avoid embarrassment, and return to the mainstream to benefit from their school in the same manner as their non-disabled peers.
