My students do not like to read. I really think it is that they do not like to read the books that our school can currently offer them. I hope to be able to find new YA literature for them so hopefully they will see that there are books that they can relate to and are interesting to read.
My students mainly come from a rural community.
Many of them have grown up on farms or neighbor one. Most have not traveled out of the state and as far as cultural activities, many have never been to a museum or theater. We are located in central Ohio so many have been able to travel to our capital, Columbus but usually for shopping trips.
My Project
Project 17 is a book centered around 6 teenagers who seemingly have nothing in common. One night though they find they all have one interest, the abandoned insane asylum that is getting torn down. They all agree to spend a night in the asylum the night before it gets torn down. They soon find out they are in for more than their bargained for.
I feel this book will capture my students' attentions and hopefully will lead them to ask for more books like it. I would like to use it in October when I am planning on doing a horror/Halloween unit.
With the book I am hoping to have my students research a haunted location in Ohio and either copy the teens in the book by making a mock documentary or writing about their "visit" to the haunted place.
I am a first year teacher and my school, like many others, is strapped for money.
There is no money to buy new books and the books that we have for class sets currently are less than ideal to make students excited for reading. I want to be able to get kids interested in reading and I think that begins by getting an interesting book for the students! Thank you for your consideration!
