My Students

My first graders have a lot to say! They would love to be able to write about their lives, their feelings and their interests in a journal that belongs only to them. There's nothing like that feeling of writing to your diary!

I work in a public school in Massachusetts.

I teach writing to all of the first graders. In the three classrooms there are 75 children. The children I work with come from diverse backgrounds. Many are immigrants and many have trauma and upset in their homes. Journal writing is a great way for kids to express their feelings in a safe zone.

My Project

I imagine the children coming into school in the morning, cracking open their own journals, grabbing a cool gel pen and getting started! Inspiring children to write is a tricky task - and so is taking care of them emotionally. Journal writing is a way to do both. Not only will they have a vehicle for self expression, I will have a window into their worlds which will help me support them in good times and bad.

Our school district does not have the resources for "cool stuff." We make do with the basics.

These little journals and the fun pens would be a boost for the kids! They would be eager to write, a teacher's dream!
