Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The challenge: Expose students to great literature. Show them the wide variety of human experience. Give them the skills to be great writers, and empower them to tell their own stories. Build a school-wide culture of reading. And do it all in a school with no books.

This year, I will be teaching a group of smart, motivated 10th and 12th graders in the inner city.

Our school, which serves 500 students, has been open for just one year. This means that our campus is bright, clean, and unfortunately quite empty. It takes years for a school to build a comprehensive collection of novels and nonfiction texts, and at the moment, our book room contains only core textbooks and empty shelving.

My Project

I am requesting 50 copies of three wonderful, high-interest memoirs to help fill those shelves: 20 copies of "Girl, Interrupted," which details the author's time in a psychiatric hospital, 10 copies of "Angela's Ashes," a reminiscence of growing up in troubled Irish family, and 20 copies of "A Long Way Gone," which tells the harrowing story of the author's time as a child soldier in Sierra Leone. My students will preview these and other pieces of narrative writing, and choose to read the books that capture their attention the most. This unit will allow us to discover the ingredients of a dynamic story, as well as to explore the mechanics of good writing. As we read these texts, students will find their own voices as writers, and create, revise, and publish their own pieces of arresting autobiographical writing.

By donating to this project, you will give students access to high-quality, high-interest books.

You will allow students to see different experiences of the world, to see their own experiences as valid and compelling, and to come into their own as writers. These books will represent the beginnings of a well-stocked and well-loved book room, and will be enjoyed for years to come.
