Reading in Science

My students need Current Science to help with their reading skills and to give them a greater appreciation of the Sciences.

My Students

"Why do I have to learn about Science?" I hear this all the time and I want it to stop. So many students don't appreciate the importance of understanding the world around them. Students need to learn to use, respect and preserve the world around them.

I have been assigned 6th grade this year.

The students who feed into my school, don't get a very rich Science experience while in elementary. I will have to grab their attention and try to maintain it all school year. Students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and areas. This community has those who live on the beach, those who live in the downtown historic area and those in the rural setting. The students have such different backgrounds that finding a common link between them, other than video games, is a struggle.

My Project

Using Current Science will allow me to go beyond the textbook. This magazine has articles that relate to current topics in the national news, on a level the students can understand. Many times there will be articles on the topics we are covering in class and the students will already have some background knowledge of it and want to learn more. Many activities can be done with the magazine that will help students with their Reading skills. I have in the past assigned articles for small groups to read and then that group will teach that article to the class. This helps with students learning to work cooperatively, improves their summarization skills and provides a chance to lead the class. A teacher's guide comes with each magazine that has short worksheets to provide the teacher with some written assignments that the students can work on independently.

If anyone has read about the nation's schools and the continual struggle with teaching reading, then they will know why it is important to provide a wide range of reading materials for students.

If the connection between Reading and Science is made, all can benefit. Schools will have improved scores at the end of the year, students learn the importance of Science in their world and teachers can see the excitement of the students learning.
