This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students to grow as they help plants to grow.

My junior high special education students are some of the most eager and active learners you will ever find.

They learn best by actively participating in what is being taught. They have a variety of disabilities (autism, specific learning disabilities, traumatic brain injury, other health impairment, and deaf and hard of hearing) but do not allow those disabilities to get in their way of learning about the world.

My Project

As a way to prepare my students for the world outside of school, I will be teaching a life skills class. This class will cover basic finance, sewing, cooking, nutrition and gardening. The resources provided through your generous donation will allow us to create a class garden. We will use the food produced in our garden to create healthy and yummy meals. My students will learn life-long skills, such as responsibility, and that food can taste good AND be nutritious. Their experiences in the garden/life skills class will help support the topics we will cover in other subject areas. This will help them see a connection between the classroom and real life.

My students often feel overlooked, forgotten, or discounted because of their disabilities.

Providing the tools for a classroom garden would allow my students to create something they can be proud of and share with the community while developing life-long skills.
