My Students

Third graders have millions of burning questions. Why do we have day and night? How do we know what dinosaurs looked like? How tall is the tallest building in the world? My students' insatiable curiosity could be satisfied through a nonfiction library!

I teach some of the wisest and most wonderful third graders in Massachusetts.

Many of my students speak English as a second language, and their families have come here from all over the world. Over half of my students are low income. Despite the challenges they face, however, these children attack school with gusto. They soak up knowledge like little sponges, and they're always hungry for more. Fortunately, our school's expanded, eight-hour day allows for in depth reading and writing around the topics that interest them, including twelve weeks of study around the nonfiction genre.

My Project

Studies have shown that students' ability to read and comprehend nonfiction texts is critical for success in high school and college. More immediately, my students need to know how to access nonfiction so that they can be successful on the state standardized tests. My nonfiction unit helps my students decipher these texts, and often ignites interests in topics previously unfamiliar to my students. However, my classroom library needs more nonfiction books written at my students' independent reading levels, so that they can practice the skills they are learning during reading. Without this practice, they cannot achieve above grade level.

Your donation of nonfiction books for my classroom library will enhance my readers workshop, supplement science and social studies, and allow my students to diversify their independent reading and develop necessary skills for success.

Thank you for your consideration!
