Movie Making in Biology

My Students

Many of the concepts in the Biology field are about things that students can not observe with the naked eye. Many students are visual learners and picture or diagram is simply not enough. Many schools have few microscopes and those are usually outdated or broken down!

My high school is a public school with a very diverse student body.

We have students that are high achieving and learn new material quickly and easily. But, we also have students that struggle to learn basic concepts and require much more time and support. We have students from many different countries. They share different cultures and experiences with us but the language gap creates some difficulty in the learning process. The students have a variety of styles or preferences for learning new material and concepts. Most students are visual learners and if they can see it, they can learn it. My request is provide them with the opportunity to visualize things that are hard to see with expensive equipment.

My Project

The personal computer cameras,or web cameras, will be used in conjunction with a computer program so that students can create movies about biological concepts that they cannot observe easily. These movies are constructed using a program called slowmation, which is a combination of slow motion and Claymation. These movies are done by using modeling clay or playdoh to create models and manipulating them. The making of these movies will give the students a hand-on learning experience and will provide a visual interpretation for them to better understand important concepts. The visual learners will be able to see and create representations of concept that could not be easily observed before. Kinetic learners will better learn these concepts by moving and using materials during the making of these movies.

My last class created movies to represent the process of cell division and truly enjoyed the learning process.

Many students stated that the movies helped them better understand the concept and they loved creating them. The movies were also used to help review for the final exam. I have the necessary computers but not enough web cameras, so I had to borrow them from other teachers. With this gift, my students will have easier access to materials that will provide a better learning opportunity.
