Apple...For The Classroom!

My students need iPods, splitters, and headphones to create Literacy Podcasts promoting motivation, enthusiasm, and critical thinking about reading in my 5th grade class.

My Students

Richard Laurence Peterson said, "Imagination is the spark that ignites the fire of creativity". My students are looking for more creative ways to express their thoughts, theories, and predictions from the novels we use everyday in my classroom. iPods will help to raise the bar on their imagination.

My students attend a K-5 elementary school in New Jersey.

As one of two male teachers in my building my classroom is usually boy heavy. At the ripe old age of 10 many have labeled themselves as "nonreaders" who "hate to read but do so because they have to". Before my students leave my classroom it is my goal to open their eyes to the joy and wonder of reading. I plan on introducing them to great pieces of literature and allow them to react to their reading in new and exciting ways.

My Project

Once provided with iPods, the splitters, and headphones my students will be able to create podcasts about their guided reading novels. In these podcasts they will be able to react more critically to what they have read and share their reactions with a wider audience. Students reading the same novels that are placed in different groups will be able to listen to the podcasts of their classmates while working in center activities. As I have noticed whenever students are exposed to new technology their enthusiasm and dedication increase because they are legitimately interested in, and excited about, what they are doing. This excitement is usually not reached by responding to question in your notebook that only the teacher will read. Students will be able to record their thoughts, review their recordings, and share their responses with a larger-possibly world wide-audience. How cool is that?!

It is essential that upper elementary students develop a love for reading.

My students have lost the love for reading that they experienced in First grade. Without a positive attitude towards reading and a real world purpose my students will miss out on visiting Hogwarts with Harry, traveling in a peach with James, or digging holes with Stanley. They will continue to label themselves as students who "hate reading" and that is an educational travesty that I cannot except. Thank you in advance.
