Mrs. York's classroom raised $651

My students need large and small recycling bins, sealed sandwich bags, and tape dispensers for our recycling project.

My Students

Help us to save our planet. Last school year my students and I decided to start recycling. To our surprise this turned out to be a huge project...that we all loved!

I work at a charter school for kids with ADD, ADHD, and Asperger's Syndrome.

I teach social/life skills to kids grades 9-12. Our school is high poverty, approximately 85% of our kids are free and/or reduced lunches. Most times it is hard to get funds in from our families to help out with field trips and supplies. I work with the best kids in the world, but when i approached them with the recycling gig I really thought they would laugh. The staff and I were so surprised when they took recycling into their own hands. They split up the duties, did the cutting, counting, packaging, and... cleaning. This was, so I thought, a hard project to keep the kids involved in when a lot of times, lets be serious, things are all about them. This project was a way for things to be all about them (using the money for the classroom for things they wanted) and for them to help save the earth.

My Project

Last year we worked from recycled cardboard boxes. This was quite difficult when it came to cleaning. Because they could not wash the boxes we brought in a lot of bugs... ewww! We belong to several recycling groups. These include Terracycle (Frito Lay bags, juice pouches, sharpie markers, papermate products, expo markers, tape dispensers, cell phones, etc...) Box Tops, Tyson A+ Program, Campbell's Soup Labels, and Coke Rewards. We also recycle pop cans. This year we are looking forward to adding plastic bottles and other brigades from Terracycle. We need recycle bins to help my kids keep organized and clean at the same time. The tape and plastic bags will help in packaging and shipping.

We hope that this year more then last year we will be able to really get our feet off the ground.

Our dream (that we are getting close to coming true) is to be able to fund a field trip at least once a quarter, along with having the funds for a variety of supplies. We were only able to go on one field trip last year and the kids love to learn in all environments. Please help us to get these supplies, they will help in our project so much!
