The Human Impact on South Florida Coastal Regions

My students need the PASCO hydrometer Probeware bundle to collect data of the coastal areas along the South Florida Coast, Key Biscayne bay and the Florida Bay areas.

My Students

"We are Scientists!" This is what my students are in my classroom. Learning through research, which includes asking questions, formulating hypothesis and data collecting to help find their answers, the students will start with their own environment and South Florida's greatest resource -- "WATER"

My students are culturally diverse.

Many of them receive free lunch and are considered below average in reading and math skills. Many have repeated different grades over the years. I teach students with many learning disabilities, or speak English as a second language. My students' parents work in the fields, plant nurseries, and other low wage jobs. They work long hours, leaving very little time or money for anything but basic needs for the family. Going into the field to collect data or establishing a garden etc. at school are things they support in spirit and will help when ever possible. The tools we need to collect this data is extremely expensive and our school district has limited resources. The PTSA also has limited funds. Since it is made up of the same parents that support their children in spirit. Many of these students have never been to the beach which is less than 5 miles from their homes.

My Project

Since the students are treated as Scientists, they will need the necessary tools to complete the research they will be working on. We will do our research, learn all there is to know about the water, how it flows, the hydrosphere, the dependency on water for both humans and animals, and how it affects our climate. We need the PASCO hydrometer Probeware bundle to collect data of the coastal areas along the South Florida Coast, Key Biscayne bay and the Florida Bay areas. The students will formulate their questions about how humans impact our water. They will take field trips to local coastal areas, canals, lakes, and rivers and collect data about the water quality. This will include temperature, salinity, nutrients, toxins etc. They will compare areas were there is more human activity to areas with very little human activity. They will bring all this data back to the classroom, where they will develop charts and graphs showing the trends. They will learn why it is important to protect our water. They will feel more apart of the world they live in, and how they can help take care of it for the future.

With the Deep Water Horizon disaster, my student have become very aware that, as humans, we do not always take precautions to protect our precious resources.

Water is very important all over the world. What these students are able to learn, will be of value for them the rest of their lives. They will learn how to think, ask questions, and how to solve problems. They will see their value as citizens in a community.
