Forensic Art From The Inside Out

My students need 4 reference books on forensic art and interview techniques.

My Students

Drawing a picture from your own memory is easy compared to drawing from someone else's. Forensic artists are called upon to do just that. My students will need to learn the processes of extracting details from the witness and then taking those fragments to construct a composite sketch.

My students are always looking for ways to help.

They are from varied backgrounds and enjoy the sciences and the arts. Attending a science and mathematics oriented K-8 school, they have access to only two art classes for the entire middle school. They accommodate a maximum of 240 of the nearly 700 middle school students. The thought of a science based art class really excited them. They are identified as a moderate poverty school, but they are a generous group of kids anyway. The idea that you can serve your community using art attracted a lot of attention. I hope to let them find new ways to be useful citizens. In 2010, we will be incorporating a projected additional 400 students (through the transfer of the gifted program for the entire county) with no additional art courses. This will stretch our resources even farther. My kids need exposure to the arts and the opportunities they provide.

My Project

Reference books for forensic art are quite limited. Quality resources are even more rare. The materials that I have requested are recognized by the forensic art community as some of the best. I have promised my students that they will have access to the best that I can obtain for them. No toys or children's adaptations. My students will be able to use the reference materials to develop their skills and research the finest techniques of interview and composite artistry. They will be expected to understand and use concepts of recall and recognition described in the references as they produce sketches from witness descriptions. They will also learn to apply drawing methods to make their work more realistic and effective in assisting in investigations. My students will be required to develop a portfolio of quick sketches, full composites from interviews, age progressions, and skeletal reconstructions. They will also produce renderings of vehicles, tattoos, jewelry, and other items.

As a former certified forensic artist, I have seen the loss of the skill set required for forensic artists.

The computerization process removes the personal interaction and limits capabilities. A qualified artist may serve thousands of victims during a career. Without the proper resources, the quality of work is insufficient to provide results. Please help my students develop this skill and preserve the art form. Imagine a missing child poster for a 16 year old with a photo of a 5 year old.
